lol

As I have come to realize that tumbler is not facebook, I have also come to realize that many people close to me have problems dealing with their lives. These people are people that I respect and admire. I wish I was qualified and capable to help these people, but I cannot due to the fact that a giant wall separates us. This wall is known as “How Would You Know?” and the fact remains I do not know. I can only speculate on how I could empathize and help these people. I do not know the situation is like nor am I close enough to them that I can ask about such issues without driving them farther away. I suppose I have several options become an extremely annoying person prying into their lives, become completely apathetic, become a professional physiologist, or a stupid, blundering, effing clown. So far I have been the stupid dumba** clown because I’m not brave enough nor strong enough to do the other options.

The New Way Doctors Learn

ziyadmd:

A simple technique dramatically improved the memory recall of Harvard Medical School students. Try it for yourself!

Turning a medical student into a doctor takes a whole lot of knowledge. B. Price Kerfoot, an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, was frustrated at how much knowledge his students seemed to forget over the course of their education. He suspected this was because they engaged in what he calls “binge and purge” learning: They stuffed themselves full of facts and then spewed them out at test time. Research in cognitive science shows that this is a very poor way to retain information, as Kerfoot discovered when he went looking in the academic literature for answers. But he also stumbled upon a method that really is effective, called spaced repetition. Kerfoot devised a simple digital tool to make engaging in spaced repetition almost effortless. In more than two dozen studies published over the past five years, he has demonstrated that spaced repetition works, increasing knowledge retention by up to 50 percent. And Kerfoot’s method is easily adapted by anyone who needs to learn and remember, not just those pursuing MDs.

BP Hauls in $7.7 Billion in Profits, Gulf Fishermen Haul in Shrimp with No Eyes
Oil giant BP, the company behind the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, reported profits of $7.7 billion for the last quarter of 2011. Company executives and industry analysts sounded bullish about the company’s future in a recent New York Times article, saying they had set aside enough money to compensate victims of the Gulf spill and had plans to expand drilling operations in the Gulf.
BP seems to be recovering nicely after the disaster, which killed 11 people and pumped 170 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. But stories from the Gulf suggest that the region is anything but healed.
The Gulf has been plagued with a suite of unexplained afflictions. Gulf fishermen say this is the worst season they can remember, with catches down 80 percent or more. Shrimp boats come home nearly empty, hauling in deformed, discolored shrimp, even shrimp without eyes. Tar balls and dead dolphins still wash up on beaches. Scientists report huge tar mats below the sand, “like vanilla swirl ice cream.” Read more in NRDC’s Switchboard blog.
